Dr. Frank Hayden
Special Olympics Canada is dedicated to enriching the lives of Canadians with an intellectual disability through sport. A movement that started almost forty years ago by Dr. Frank Hayden, a young sport scientist from the University of Western Ontario, who was doing research on the importance of physical fitness for individuals with an intellectual disability. Dr. Hayden brought his research to the Kennedy Foundation and under the leadership of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Dr. Hayden's research led to the first Special Olympics Games in Chicago for athletes with an intellectual disability.
