More than 200 guests joined host and Toronto legend Darryl Sittler, Special Olympics athletes and celebrities from the sports world for the annual Sittler-Whitt Golf Classic on June 2. Rolling out across the traditional north and links-style south courses of the spectacular Club at Bond Head in Ontario’s cottage country, the popular summer event in support of Special Olympics Canada marked its 17th year. To date, the classic has raised more than $1.1 million for SOC.
It takes a lot of work, energy, passion and drive to bring an event like this to life each year. And so, Special Olympics Canada wishes to acknowledge:
- Special Olympics athletes, the day’s true draw who put their magical stamp on the event program in countless ways, reminding everyone that it’s not just about winning, but about having fun along the way;
- Darryl Sittler and Ernie Whitt, two of Toronto’s best-loved sports heroes for their commitment to this annual tradition;
- the tournament's numerous sponsors and partners, including Canada Life, Molson, Sussex Strategy Group, Toronto Sun, Toyota Canada and Vincor Canada, for their generous contributions;
- all the spirited volunteers, from friends and family to Team Mattel, who gave selflessly of their time, covering off everything from registration to the silent auction;
- TSN’s Vic Rauter, our emcee who charmed the crowd again this year;
- the numerous sports celebrities who added star power to the day including hockey legend Dave Gardner; former CFL stars Rob Hitchcock, Mike Morreale and Adrion Smith; John Mitchell, Colin Murphy, Kris Newbury and Jeremy Williams from the Toronto Marlies hockey team; Matt Carroll and Chris Driscoll, both from Toronto's Rock lacrosse team; TSN’s SportsCentre host Cory Woron and Carl DeMarco, president of World Wrestling Entertainment Canada.
- the multi-talented golf committee led by Bill McIntosh, and including Dave Gardner, John Collins, Vince Moffat, Paul Hatton, Mike Trottman, In the Zone’s George Karamaritis, a wonder of networking and big ideas and SOC’s very own fundraising manager Clayton Charters and marketing coordinator Alexius D’Cruze; and,
- the tremendous team at The Club at Bond Head including Vince Carbert, tour coordinator, and Jamie King, director of sales and marketing, for their flawless execution from the shotgun start to the final toast of the evening.
